Online Auction Platform

An auction is a clock with money attached. Everything else is ordinary marketplace work, and the clock is the part that has to be exactly right. A close that fires late counts a bid that should not have, and one that fires early loses a bid that should have. We build that, designed new for your market by a team that has built marketplaces many times. Most first releases go live in about 30 days.

  • iOS, Android and web
  • Timed, live and sealed bid
  • Proxy bids and soft close
How it works

From a consignment to a settlement.

An auction is a short event with a long tail of admin either side of it. This is the path a lot takes, and the part of the software that carries each step.

  1. 01

    Take the lot in

A seller consigns, your team photographs and describes it, and it gets a lot number.

    Consignment and cataloguing

  2. 02

    Publish the catalogue

Lots go live with a starting price, a reserve and the bid steps you set.

    Catalogue and increments

  3. 03

    Approve the bidders

Identity checked and a deposit taken before anybody bids on a serious lot.

    Bidder approval

  4. 04

    Run the sale

Proxy bids run themselves, and a late bid extends the clock rather than beating it.

    Proxy bids and soft close

  5. 05

    Fall of the hammer

The lot closes on the second, the winner is told, and the invoice is raised.

    Close and invoicing

  6. 06

    Settle both sides

Premium added, the seller's statement produced, and the money split and sent.

    Settlement and payouts

Features

One platform, three points of view.

Bidders, sellers and you each see the app built for their job, all running on one system you own.

For bidders

Find the lot, set a maximum and know exactly where you stand.

  • Browse the catalogue by sale, category or lot
  • Register once, approved before the first bid
  • A maximum bid the system works up to in steps
  • Outbid alerts by push, email and message
  • A watchlist with a reminder before it closes
  • The clock, the bid history and the next step shown
  • Absentee bids left before the sale opens
  • One invoice after the sale, premium included

For sellers

Consign a lot, set the floor and get a statement you can read.

  • Consign from the app, with photos and a description
  • Starting price, reserve and estimate per lot
  • Bulk lot upload for a whole sale at once
  • Watch the bidding on your own lots live
  • Relist what did not sell into the next sale
  • Commission and fees shown before you agree
  • A settlement statement after every sale
  • Payout on the schedule you were promised

For you, the admin

Run the sale, approve the room and settle the money afterwards.

  • Sales, lots and catalogues, built and scheduled
  • Bid steps, soft close and reserve rules
  • Bidder approval, deposits and bidding limits
  • Buyer's premium, seller commission and fees
  • Invoicing, payment chasing and non-payment
  • Tax treatment per lot, including margin schemes
  • Every bid logged, with who and when
  • Sell-through, hammer totals and unsold lots
Ways to earn

Six ways your auction platform earns.

Start with one and add the rest as you grow. Every rate is yours to set in the admin panel.

  • Most common

    Buyer's premium

A percentage on top of the hammer price, which is how the trade has always earned.

  • Seller commission

A cut of the hammer price, taken out of what the seller is paid.

  • Lotting and photography

A fee per lot for taking it in, shooting it and writing the description.

  • Featured lots

Paid placement in the catalogue and on the home screen, sold per lot.

  • Trade subscriptions

A monthly plan for dealers who consign every sale, with lower commission.

  • Unsold and relisting fees

A charge where a lot does not meet its reserve and goes into the next sale.

Clients

What our clients say.

I have to be honest, sometimes it's hard to find a company or someone abroad to do your project. Not only might you waste your time and money, there is this thing called trust. In business you must trust the person you are dealing with.
Zack GizawDec 2022
Initially, I was hesitant to deal with them, believing their customer service would be poor. However, I was surprised. They act with great responsibility and professional efficiency. My regards to them.
Ahmed NhariApr 2024
I've been working with Appkodes for almost a year and i can recommend them to work with as they are so much friendly and professional and you can clearly see it once you start your project right away. They are intact and they are transparent with their communication.

Inside the app

Everything an auction needs, from day one.

An auction looks like a marketplace with a countdown. The countdown is the part that has to be right. Almost everything that goes wrong with these platforms goes wrong in the last thirty seconds of a lot.

This is the machinery we build into yours, shaped around what you sell and how your trade settles up. Each piece is designed and built new for you, by a team that has built marketplaces many times.

  • The close, done properlyA lot ends at a moment, and the whole business depends on that moment being right. It runs on a scheduler built for the job rather than on a cron that fires when somebody happens to load a page, which is how the plugin stacks do it and why their timers drift.
  • Proxy bids that behaveA bidder leaves a maximum and the system bids in increments on their behalf, going only as far as it must. Two maximums arriving at once is where naive implementations produce the wrong winner, so the ordering is settled in the database rather than in the browser.
  • Soft close beats snipingA bid in the last moments pushes the end out by a few minutes, and keeps pushing while bidding continues. Without it your sale is won by whoever has the fastest connection, and your honest bidders stop coming back.
  • Reserve, estimate and stepsA starting price to open, a reserve the seller will not go below, and an increment table that scales with the money. Whether the reserve has been met is public. What it actually is stays private.
  • Premium and commissionBuyer's premium on top of the hammer, seller commission out of it, and any lotting or photography fees beside both. Every rate is a setting, and the invoice and the statement are produced from the same numbers.
  • Bidder approval and depositsIdentity checked and a deposit held before a stranger bids on a serious lot, with a limit per bidder. It is the reason a marketplace can let somebody it has never met bid twenty thousand.
  • Lots, catalogues and consignmentIntake, photography, descriptions, lot numbers and a catalogue that goes out on a date. Bulk upload for a whole sale at once, because cataloguing is the daily work and typing it twice is how auction businesses lose their evenings.
  • After the hammerInvoices with premium and tax, payment chased, collection or shipping arranged, then a settlement statement and a payout for the seller. The sale ends and the admin begins, which is the part most software leaves to a spreadsheet.
Additional features

The extra features you may need.

The core platform covers lots, bidding, the close, and the invoicing and payouts after it. These are the extras clients ask for most often, and each one is designed for your app and priced in your costed plan.

  • Live and simulcast sales

An auctioneer on the rostrum with online bidders in the same sale.

  • Sealed bid sales

Nobody sees anybody else's offer until the deadline passes.

  • Absentee bids

Left before the sale opens and executed on the bidder's behalf.

  • Bidder deposits

Held before a high-value lot and released after settlement.

  • Tax and margin schemes

Per lot treatment, including second-hand margin rules.

  • Shipping and collection

Quotes at checkout, or a collection window booked by the buyer.

  • Condition reports

Requested by a bidder before the sale and answered by your team.

  • Catalogue import

A whole sale loaded from a spreadsheet or another system.

  • Reverse and Dutch auctions

Buyers posting requirements, or a price that falls until somebody takes it.

  • Store launch designs

Store screenshots and banners designed for launch.

Markets

One platform, many salerooms.

The same pattern of lot, catalogue, bid and settlement works for almost anything sold by competition. Each version is designed around its own trade: its lots, its rules, its idea of a fair close.

  • Art and antiquesEstimates, condition reports and provenance on the lot.
  • Classic and salvage carsInspection reports, title transfer and collection windows.
  • Industrial plantWhole-site clearances with hundreds of lots at once.
  • Property and landLegal packs, guide prices and an exchange on the fall of the hammer.
  • Watches and jewelleryAuthentication, high deposits and tight bidder approval.
  • Collectibles and cardsGraded items, small lots and very frequent sales.
  • Wine and spiritsCases, provenance and storage until collection.
  • Agriculture and livestockSale days, weights and buyers who bid from the ring.
  • Government and liquidationSurplus and insolvency stock with an audit trail on every lot.
  • Charity fundraisingSilent and live lots, with gift aid and donor records.
  • Storage and repossessionUnit contents sold sight unseen, with fixed collection times.
  • Domains and digital assetsInstant transfer on payment, with escrow between strangers.

Trust and safety

Keep the saleroom honest.

An auction is worth exactly as much as the trust bidders have in the close. These are built in from the first release, rather than bolted on after a disputed lot.

  • Bidder verificationIdentity and a deposit before anybody bids on a serious lot.
  • Shill bid detectionA seller bidding up their own lot, flagged rather than ignored.
  • Reserve kept privateWhether it is met is public. What it is stays between you and the seller.
  • Every bid loggedWho bid, how much, and to the second when it landed.
  • Payment before releaseNothing leaves the saleroom until the invoice is settled.
  • Non-payment handledChasing, a second chance offer, and a bar on the account.

What you get along the way.

  • A plan before you commitThe scope, a fixed price and a launch date in writing, free, whether you go ahead or not.
  • A prototype in week oneYour screens in your brand, clickable, before a line of code is written.
  • A new build every weekThe app reaches your phone each week, so you watch it take shape instead of waiting for a reveal.
  • Both stores handledWe prepare the listings, submit the apps and answer the reviewers. Only the store account fees are yours.
  • A team that staysAfter launch we keep the apps fixed, current and running, and price new features the same way.
  • A rehearsal sale before you openWe run a full sale end to end with your team bidding against each other, so the first real lot to close is not the first lot ever to close.
  • The last minute, under loadThe close is load tested with a bid storm on a single lot, because that is the one moment your platform cannot be approximately right.
  • Your rates set before launchBuyer's premium, seller commission, bid steps and the soft close window are configured and signed off, not left as defaults.
  • Your catalogue loadedExisting lots, sellers and past sales imported from whatever you run now, so you open with a saleroom rather than an empty one.

Questions

Before you build.

Not here? The costed plan answers the rest, for your app.

Can it work like eBay or a saleroom platform?

Yes. Timed lots, proxy bidding, reserves, soft close, invoicing and payouts all work the way bidders and sellers expect. The difference is that it is your platform, with your categories, your premium and your rules, designed and built new for what you sell.

Timed, live or sealed bid, and which do I need?

Timed is the common shape, and it is a scheduling problem more than anything else. A lot opens, runs for days and closes at a moment you set in advance. Live is an auctioneer taking bids in real time, with a room and online bidders together. That is a different build, because everybody has to see the same number at the same instant. Sealed bid hides every offer until a deadline. Most clients start timed and add the others later.

How does proxy bidding work?

A bidder leaves the most they are willing to pay, and the system bids in increments no further than it must. Somebody with a higher maximum outbids them automatically. The maximum itself is never shown to anybody, which is the whole point of it.

What stops last-second sniping?

Soft close is the answer, and it works like this. A bid in the final minutes pushes the end time out, and it keeps pushing while bidding continues. Without it the lot goes to whoever has the fastest connection rather than the highest bid. The bidders who lose that way do not come back.

Can we just use WordPress plugins instead?

For a small sale, sometimes, and we will say so rather than sell you a build you do not need. Where those stacks give out is the close. They end their lots on a cron that only fires when somebody loads a page. Timers drift under load, and load is exactly what a popular lot produces as it ends. Once the money in a sale matters, the clock has to become its own scheduler.

How do you handle buyer's premium and tax?

The premium is a rate you set, added on top of the hammer price, and it appears on the buyer's invoice beside the lot. Seller commission comes out of the hammer price, and it appears on their settlement statement. Tax gets treated per lot, and that includes any second-hand margin scheme which applies to it. That is expensive to get wrong, in a way most software never warns you about.

Do bidders have to be approved before bidding?

That is yours to decide, per sale and per value. Open bidding suits small lots and low prices. Above a threshold most operators check identity and hold a deposit first, with a bidding limit per account. It is what lets you accept a bid of twenty thousand from somebody you have never met.

What happens when the winner does not pay?

The software chases on a schedule you set, then offers the lot to the underbidder at their last bid, then bars the account. Where you took a deposit it can be applied. Non-payment is normal in this trade rather than exceptional, so it is built as a workflow instead of an email somebody remembers to send.

Is this a ready-made app?

No. Every app we build is designed and built new for its client. We have built marketplaces many times, and that experience is what lets us fix the scope, the price and the launch date before we start.

How long does it take?

Most first releases go live in about 30 days. A larger platform takes longer, and so does one that runs live or simulcast sales. Your costed plan fixes the scope and the exact date in writing.

Which platforms do I get?

An iOS app, an Android app and a website for bidders and sellers, plus a web admin panel to run the sales. Some clients start with fewer and add the rest later.

Who owns the app and the data?

You do, both. The code sits in your own repository, the cloud accounts stand in your company's name, and we take no commission on anything you sell. Documentation gets written for a developer who never met us.
